GW Conversion Contest

Since I'll be heading to Gamesday Baltimore this year, I took a peek at the contest categories this morning. Aside from the usual Golden Demon competitions, it looks like GW is hosting a slew of other ones this year... and this one caught my eye.

40K Vehicle Conversion Competition
- Single vehicle no taller than 18"
- 40K vehicles only (no Forge World models allowed)
- Unpainted models recommended to clearly see conversion work
- Must be composed of at least 60% Games Workshop product
- Register by 12pm
- Judging finished by 3pm, pickup at 4pm
- Awards for Crowd Favorite, Studio Favorite, and Best Overall

From Games Workshop's site.

Is this the contest I've been dreaming of? Did GW finally make something for the converters? They want me to submit unpainted stuff? Freedom at last!

Of course, the only problem with that is the fact that most of the stuff I'd like to submit doesn't satisfy their "at least 60% Games Workshop product" rule.

So, dear readers, I'm turning to you on this one. Do you have any great ideas? My current best concept involves a looted Valkyrie, but I'm totally open to suggestions on this one. Making something like a Mega Dread would be great fun, but I don't see a way I could really do that with 60% GW bits...

  1. I’ve had this idea for a bit. Make a Mek’s personal Deff Dread. This way you could give it all sorts of crazy weaponry like a Shokk Attack Gun, Kustom Forcefield, Lifta-Droppa, etc.

    Just my 2 cents.

  2. It’s a neat idea, and one that I certainly like, but… if you’ve seen the pictures from the FW Open Day, you may have seen that they’re making a ‘Meka Dread’, which is a Big Mek’s version of a Mega Dread. I was planning on making one for Booma, but that’d be more a scratchbuild than anything, because there’s nothing of a comparable size to convert from.

  3. Looted Valkyrie sounds fun, but what rules would it use?
Frankly I think you doing a Deff Dread is a good bet.

  4. Try doing one of the Tua tanks. A Kaptin Badrukk special.

  5. Oh, I didn’t know about that. And Grundel do you mean Tau?

  6. Winterous: Forgeworld seems to be making a ‘Warchoppa’, if the pictures from their Open Day are any indication. It seems to be some sort of flyer similar to a valkyrie that drops Kommandoz, of all things. I would have expected Stormboyz, but… well, who knows. Point is, I expect FW’ll be releasing rules for this thing, and it does look like a staggeringly easy thing to make since it’s basically a platform with guns and two rotors. Looting a Valkyrie would also be another approach to this, I figure.

Grundel: Not sure I’d want to convert off any Tau stuff, to be honest. I’ve never liked the form of a lot of their vehicles, and it’s hard to mesh the ramshackle tendencies of the orks overtop the delicate curves of both them and the Eldar in a way that’s actually pleasing to the eye. I do appreciate the ideas, though.

    A couple other thoughts…

I’ve been mulling making this thing over for a while now, as a personal transport for Flash Gitz, since it seems somewhat nautical in shape. (Click for larger)

Grundel’s comment about “A Kaptin Badrukk Special” reminded me about it. The image isn’t mine – it was made by Waaagh forumer Caelstrom. I do have a bunch of the parts required for it (like the land raider treads, and the battlewagon chassis)… what do you guys think?

I’m obviously not building anything immediately, since I have exams on the horizon and I’ll have two months to tinker with things until Gamesday rolls around.

Winterous’ idea of a Deff Dread is also pretty workable. I just got my first plastic one today, and I have to say that they’re absolutely gorgeous kits. I’ve been considering making a ‘Kanifex’ out of the thing, similar to this one, as I think it’s a brilliant use of bitz, and the deffdread’s chassis really works as a carnifex’s shape when you flip it around. Like a Big Mek saw the havoc a Fex was causing, and felt inspired.

    Just some more thoughts, anyway.

  7. I’d do both. :D

  8. I have actually tried contacting GW to ask if there’s a limit on the number of entries by a single person in this contest, a la the Golden Demons, but I haven’t gotten any sort of response yet. I’d love to submit a bunch of stuff.
